okay, i figured out that:
- i need to load several kernel modules, like usb-storage and sbp2,
for the iPod to show up in my /proc/scsi/scsi.
- because the iPod is listed first in /proc/scsi/scsi, its device is
/dev/sda.
- its filesystem type is actually hfsplus. who knew? (this is the
latest-generation iPod, which the box says is for mac or windows,
fwiw).
- and, last but not least, gtkpod wanted my mountpoint to be named
/mnt/ipod, no capital 'P'.
just for the record.
all appears to work now. my files are transferring over
slow-as-molassses USB 1 ...
