So now I've gone to evolution 2 from experimental. There was no matching evolution-exchange package, so I downloaded the current ximian-connector source from Novell and built it using the debian/ directory from the 1.5 package. It compiled first time and seems to work fine.
I still get the 'formatting message' problem very occasionally, but not nearly so often. I'm running a mixed system so it's probably my fault.
