In /etc/resolv.conf make sure you have
search your_isp_domain
nameserver your_isp_primary_nameserver

And another nameserver line for your isp's backup dns server if they
have it. For a router the nameserver would be the ip of the router.

Example:
search cox.net
nameserver 68.1.17.9
