andreas@sirius:~$ dpkg -S libz.so
zlib1g: /usr/lib/libz.so.1
zlib1g: /usr/lib/libz.so.1.2.1.1
zlib1g-dev: /usr/lib/libz.so

Probably you have to install the zlib1g-dev and/or zlib1g package, at
least if you use Sarge. I don't know what the version of zlib on Woody
and Sid is.
