I am looking to create an image on the hard disk instead of directly to
cdrom. Problem is cdrecord and friends only record directly to cdrom as
far as I can tell, and a audio cd is not iso9660 so mkisofs doesn't
work.

I found out how to create the raw files (I think) but I can't figure
out how to write them to a file so that it will look like an audio cd
image, and the exact format (mainly whether it should be big endian or
little endian, the rest I figured out).
