Does ctrl-alt-<+> help? That's the +plus button on the keypad. The
three key combo should cycle through the various resolutions. Looking
at /var/log/XFree86.0.log might reveal that only a low-res screen
was found. Maybe you picked the wrong chipset? Try "vesa"
