Hi David

There are as many opinions on this list on ways to do things are there
are options ;)  

However, FWIW I would recommend installing aptitude and apt-listbugs to
maintain your sid system.  It takes a while to get used to aptitude's
interface (particularly if you've used dselect) but it is very useful in
warning you when packages are broken and apt-listbugs will list grave
bugs prior to completing the installation which will give you the
opportunity tp abort, if necessary.
