I also reported several modules that were failing to load on boot
because of errors, and other modules loading that shouldn't have.
I finally managed to fixed the problem, thanks to David Shea of
Emperor Linux (great place to buy a laptop, by the way -- these guys
have been extremely helpful to me).
It turns out the problem was that the upgrade installed pcimodules
(from pciutils package), and /etc/hotplug/pci.rc invoked it, via the
line:
LISTER=`which pcimodules`
Commenting that out put everything back to normal.
