ALSA / C-Media 8738 - module installed twice?

Hi,

I'm having trouble getting my C-Media 8738 PCI to work under ALSA.
It is working with OSS, but there is a bug in the XMMS OSS/C-Media driver (or some such), making the sound skip. The proposed solution is to switch to ALSA..

After apt-getting alsa, I get this:
frasier:~# /etc/init.d/alsa start
Restoring ALSA mixer settings ... failed:
You may want to run 'alsactl restore' manually to view any errors.
frasier:~# alsactl restore
alsactl: load_state:1134: No soundcards found...
frasier:~# dmesg

It seems that the "cmpci" is running twice, succeeding the first time, then failing. I've been looking through my /etc/modutils, and can't seem to find anything blatantly wrong (not that I'd really know what to look for ..)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
