I have had issues with mozilla/thunderbird vs. courier-imap in the past.
Check 'account settings' | 'server settings' |'advanced' | 'maximum
number of server connections to cache'.
I believe this defaults to 5. I decreased this to 2 and the server
disconnects went away.

Just checked at 5 again. After opening more than a few folders I get
"server my.domain has disconnected. The server has gone down or there
may be a network problem." Lowering this value to 2 solves it (although
the logic behind it goes 'woosh' over my head).

Hope this helps.
