By the way, you don't want to stay logged in as root any longer than necessary. As soon as you're finished doing root things, log out and log back in as your normal user. There are tools to make this sort of thing easier (like "sudo"), but for now, just log out/in as root as necessary.
PS: It's also a good idea to have a descriptive subject line. As David said, this list generates a lot of email, and a lot of members won't even bother reading a posting that doesn't have a descriptive subject line. Yours could be something like "Newbie install; no GUI" or "Fresh install doesn't have X", etc.
