put "autofs4" on a new line in your /etc/modules. This loads it at boot time and is probably all you want.
The problem is that autofs reacts as a virtual device to mount. So if you do a "mount" when autofsd is working you will see:
automount(pid567) on /var/autofs/misc type autofs (rw,fd=5,pgrp=567,minproto=2,maxproto=4)
But "automount(pid567)" is no real device and so it can't be probed for by modprobe
