sound problem: init_module: No such device

sound is no longer working after having rebooted my computer. when i
try to play music using music123, i get the following error:

Can't find a suitable libao driver. (Is device in use?)

this i've seen before. so i updated kernels to make sure i had all
the modules i needed -- sound and soundcore are both modprobed just
fine -- but when i try to modprobe es1371 (the `lspci -vv` output for
my soundcard is below), i get the following error message:

orange:~# modprobe es1371
/lib/modules/2.4.26-1-686/kernel/drivers/sound/es1371.o: init_module: No such device
Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters.
You may find more information in syslog or the output from dmesg
/lib/modules/2.4.26-1-686/kernel/drivers/sound/es1371.o: insmod /lib/modules/2.4.26-1-686/kernel/drivers/sound/es1371.o failed
/lib/modules/2.4.26-1-686/kernel/drivers/sound/es1371.o: insmod es1371 failed

my soundcard:

00:0f.0 Multimedia audio controller: Ensoniq: Unknown device 0371 (rev 09)
        Subsystem: Ensoniq: Unknown device 0371
Control: I/O+ Mem- BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR- FastB2B-
        Status: Cap+ 66Mhz- UDF- FastB2B- ParErr- DEVSEL=slow >TAbort- <TAbort- <MAbort- >SERR- <PERR-
        Latency: 32 (3000ns min, 32000ns max)
Interrupt: pin A routed to IRQ 12
        Region 0: I/O ports at e400 [size=64]
        Capabilities: <available only to root>

here's what i know:

- all my sound devices exist and have the correct permissions, and i'm
in the audio group (the errors come as root, too). i tried
regenerating them with /dev/MAKEDEV; i tried symlinking /dev/dsp to
each of /dev/dsp{0..3} in turn. i have devfs in my kernel (2.4.26),
which i've been led to believe is relevant here.

- knoppix (v3.3) gives me the same error, and i can't get sound from
it, either!! this is unusal -- usually when i have a problem like
this, knoppix can auto-detect what i need ...

- the only thing at all relevant that shows up in dmesg when i try to
modprobe the es1371 module is this line:

        es1371: version v0.32 time 18:47:57 May 1 2004

i've exhausted my knowledge of the sound subject. does this look
familiar to anyone who could help me out?

thanks a lot,

</nori>

[sorry about the earlier blank message -- don't know what happened
there]
