By the proper driver, do you mean that you installed
the nvidia module with nVidia's self-installer?
If you did and startx is still failing with "no
screens found" then you may simply need to load the
nvidia module with modprobe.  There are instructions
on how to configure the module to autoload (and on how
to correctly configure your XF86Config-4) in
/usr/share/doc/NVIDIA_GLX-1.0/README (provided you
have installed the nVidia drivers)
If you haven't installed with nVidia's utility, you
can download it from their website.  In my experience,
it works very well.
