I have a Dell D800 and I had more or less the same thing. It turned out to be 
the ALSA drivers, completely locked up my kernel from time to time.

I stopped alsa removed all sound  modules and it was fixed. I'm going to give 
2.6.7 a go hoping that that will fix it.
