Thanks to all those helpful people who responded. I have three HDs and around 70G free, so I'll keep Knoppix as my working system and gradually "work up" a true Debian system on a separate partition. From discussions on this list it seems that "testing" (sarge) is the way to go initially. I have downloaded several docs, including Debian Reference (Osamu insisted <g>) and hope all goes well from here. -- Regards, Brian
