Here's an extract of my lilo.conf:

image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.5
        label=Linux26mod
        append="acpi=on idle=poll"

Note that I use idle=poll and not idle=pass.

hdparm -X udma3 /dev/hda (you may need to change the actual device).

Please read hdparm man page before trying.
