Re: Test print OK, can't otherwise print!

I have had problems with lpr interacting with CUPS. It seems to prefer
lp. Since many applications with gnome default to lpr, I had to make
a symbolic link from lpr to lp in /usr/bin. One might expect that an
alias would work in, say the .cshrc file (I use tcsh). However, I
believe that applications within gnome don't touch any or the user's
resource files, so the environment variables are not valid (I'm guessing
that gnome implicitly uses bash.)

Test prints and prints from the command line work. Applications, both Gnome & kKDE don't. However, although you didn't mention it, on my machine root CAN print from apps.
