I realize this thread is over 2 weeks old, but was never resolved online. Steve, have you solved this problem, as I am having exactly the same symptoms. Test prints and prints from the command line work. Applications, both Gnome & kKDE don't. However, although you didn't mention it, on my machine root CAN print from apps.
