Put things like this in your .muttrc:
color   index           brightred       black   ~N

Mutt is pretty useless until you visit www.dotfiles.com and find a 
.muttrc that you like, and tweak it for yourself.  Most of the "killer 
feature set" isn't there until you put stuff in .muttrc.
