Thanks, everyone! Due to Chris Metzler's comment about the ESD in Gnome, I checked the sound options in the gnome desktop preferences, and by unchecking "enable sound server startup" my woes were ended. I hate it when it's easier than you're expecting, and you don't look at what's right in front of your face. Oh well, at least it's fixed now. thanks, all! --Phil Ramey
