Thanks, that's a useful file I didn't know about.

I think so.  In GNOME, the left Win key brings up the pawprint menu and
the left Alt key does the things described as "Meta" in the window
manager keyboard shortcut options.

Section "InputDevice"
....
        Option "XkbOptions" "compose:rwin,alt:rightaltismeta"

The compose key still works, but the right alt key (which is labelled
"AltGr" on the keyboard) still does (as far as I can tell) nothing. 
I'll poke around with various options but if you think of anything else
to try I'd appreciate it.

I am however very happy about getting that compose key back!  (Whereas
I've put up with a useless right Alt for years.)
