The real issue is the version of XFree86 you will be running. For example, the Radeon 7000/8000 series are well supported by XFree86 4.2 and the later versions of 2.4. I am not sure if the support for those Radeons goes all the way back to 2.4.18, but it is trivial to get a newer kernel from Sid or Sarge, or even roll your own. -Roberto Sanchez
