Essentially for Althon XP it seems to be a choice of Nvidia nforce2, or Via
KT400/KT600 chipsets. There are lots of performance comparisons around -
http://www.extremetech.com/ has numerous. The conclusion is that for the high
end boards the Nvidia is marginally (~5%) faster.

Personally I've only bought a cheapo XFX KT600-ALX based board recently. It
seems rock solid with a 2.6 kernel and all the integrated peripherals
including sound (alsa), sata, agp and usb 1+2 seem to be happily working.

I've read mixed comments on how well the nforce2 chipset is supported by stock
kernels. There's a bad article here:

http://www.linuxhardware.org/article.pl?sid=03/07/10/1551245&mode=thread

..and searching for nforce2 in newsgroups will bring up countless problems
from users.

Apparently the audio, AGP and ethernet drivers are still not integrated into
the stock kernel. Anybody care to elaborate?

Thx
Rob
