from Announce: 3.0r3 "i386 kernels cannot be exchanged" - why?

What's the connection between
"i386 kernels" and "local or vendor-provided modules"?

Does it mean that non-i386 architectures run a limited number of stock
kernels without bizarre built-in modules?

So, the QUESTIONS:

- Do ALL i386 kernels contain such modules? Or what else?
- What are the implications?
- Is one stuck with vulns for now? If so, till when?
