Sorry for my very incomplete answer. I did not use Debian for quite
a longer time but I remember that ogle worked quite fine, even for
encrypted DVDs.
I think ogle is (or at least was) available as a package for woody.
Once I installed it, there was a script or something like that, that
installed libdvdcss, after that everything worked fine.

Generally I never had problems with ogle on any Un*x-Like System.
Maybe you want to try that and I'm sure that some people on this
list can point you in the right direction.
