I tried this, because it seemed to me that there was some sort of conflict
that wasn't allowing the IDE controllers to be accessed, but that didn't
help. In fact, I tried disabling several of the chipset modules, and I could
never get the installer to see the hard drive.

There isn't even an entry for my hard drive in /dev or fstab, so I cannot
even run fdisk or cfdisk against the drive.

I downloaded my sarge isos from debian.org and am running them from the CDs.
