If the problem is that esd is hanging on to the OSS devices and not
letting other applications write to them, that's easily fixed without
requiring you to just not run esd.  You just need to tell esd to get
out of the way of other programs when it's done with a particular
sound.

When I run esd, I do it this way:  in my /etc/esound/esd.conf, I have:

[esd]
auto_spawn=1
spawn_options=-terminate -nobeeps -as 2
spawn_wait_ms=100

The meaning of all that is explained in the man page for esd, which I
suggest looking at.
