Meaning that you created the backport? If not then this won't help. I'm
looking for instances of successes or failures of running Mailman 2.1.4
installed from the source tarball not a debian package.

I'm running sendmail. If I'm not mistaken it looks like installing this
package will uninstall sendmail.
