Do you have a grub boot floppy?  Then you can get to a boot prompt and
type in whatever you think your boot config ought to be (this says boot
/dev/hda2, mount /dev/hda9 as root):

  grub> root (hd0,1)
  grub> kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda9 ro hdc=scsi

That wouldn't be reasonable justification for me.  What the heck is a
LAN party?  Linux is the firewall, fileserver, database server, mail
server, last line of defence, & etc. for a lot of corporate LANs.  You
can even run games on it.
