Re: usb storage devices

how do you know where the usb storage device is in the /dev/ directory?
syslog says:
hub.c: USB new device connect on bus2/1, assigned device number 3
...
USB Mass Storage device found at 3
No clue what this means in terms /dev/hdxy devices or /dev/usb/ devices.
Is this something I can hotplug to mount?
It depends on what dev manager you are using.
Informations can be found in /proc or /sys (on 2.6)
I have written a small script that allows to automatically update the fstab when
plugging in a USB mass storage device, with a pretty name as mount point.
It just retrieve infos from /proc or /sys to find the device.
Look at them, and feel free to improve them.
For 2.4: http://ccomb.free.fr/usbstorage/updfstab-2.4
For 2.6: http://ccomb.free.fr/usbstorage/updfstab-2.6
A 2.4 version modified by Florian Iragne:

You need devfs, hotplug, fam (if gnome).
The script must be renamed to "updfstab", put in /usr/sbin/,
and set it executable.
