It is not hanging. It is waiting for you to log in.

apt-get install x-window-system-core

will install the necessary packages. Next you need some kind of
windowmanager or desktop environment, e.g.

apt-get install menu icewm xdm
or
apt-get install menu kde kdm

To rerun the configuration program, call

dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86

If you need more help, tell us about
- your graphic card
- the screen and device sections of /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
- the lines beginning with (EE) and the last 10-15 lines of 
  /var/log/XFreee86.0.log
