X Res on Dell Optiplex GX270
I'm posting this only for archival purposes (to perhaps help others).
The Dell Optiplex GX270 computer apparently ships with a broken BIOS (v.
A03) that does not correctly report to the operating system the size of
video RAM assigned to the integrated Intel 82865G. MS-Windows apparently
doesn't care and works around the problem, and thus (so the rumor goes),
Dell doesn't care either.
Downgrading the A03 BIOS to the A01 BIOS solved most of my problem. I
still can't use the i810 driver in X, but with the VESA driver I can now
do 1280x1024x24-bit. DRI is not working, but I don't know enough about
it to even know if it'll work with the VESA driver.
For the record, I'm running unstable with XFree86 Version 4.3.0.1 on
kernel 2.6.3-1-686
