Nothing else will ping at all.

Bring down the eth(x) interface, remove the module for the nic, modprobethe module and look for error messages.

Total newbie here Greg. Could you please be more explicit? Also am I rightin thinking that both lights being on on the nic and also the light on onmy switch may point to a software rather than hardware failure?

I should also mention I'm using the tulip driver for a netgear fa310tx,maybe that isn't a good one to use. However it did work for a few days; weird?
