Well to put it a simple way your current kernel, is I believe the Debian kernel bf2.4.18
which is not a Intrd image kernel. The new kernel you installed most likely is a Intrd kernel.
The documents which should be located in /usr/share/doc/kernel-image-2.4.24-1-686 well tell
you for sure. You probably need to install the Intrd package, or recompile your kernel with the
Intrd support off. Also make sure that lilo, or grub is configured to boot with an Intrd image.
A lot of people recompile the kernel with Intrd support off, by using the debain kernel package
tools. The documents in /usr/doc will also give you some insight on what to do. Also I believe
another thread is covering kernel compiliation.
