The mouse won't be active at this point anyway, so to say the mouse 
locks up isn't quite accurate.

Does the capslock light work if you toggle the capslock? Does Alt-F2 
have any effect?

I'd pop a Knoppix CD in and boot off that to see if it works, just for 
information gathering purposes.
