Do you have a cdrom installed and can you set your bios to boot from the cd.
If so can you borrow a bootable cd eg. Knoppix, BBC,etc. That way you can
boot the cd and do things like fsck the harddrive partitions. That 'may' get
you right off the hook.
I'm sure others are better advisors.
Keep us posted and good luck, there is no need to loose your data.
