You didn't answer this question.  Are you logged in directly as root, or
did you run 'su' or 'sudo' from another userid?

That's a bit terser than is useful.

Are you *logged in as root, directly, on an X display?*  I doubt it.

The solution I suggested previously should work.  Try it and report
results.
