More useful information:

  - What command are you running?
  - What is the *exact* error message?
  - How is your root session executing?
  - Are you local or remote on this box?

If you are logged in as a nonprivileged user, are 'su'd or 'sudo'd to
root, and are attempting to run an X client, try specifying the local
display *and* merging xauth records, as root:

    # export DISPLAY=<local display>
    # xauth merge ~/<nonprivileged user>/.Xauthority

Peace.
