Re: Realtek rtl8139 nic and 2.4.20 kernel

I have one more thought on the matter of trying to get my rtl8139 NIC
going on the 2.4 kernel (which may have been painfully obvious to most
of you...).

Whenever I have tried to configure the card in 2.4 using modconf or
pppoeconf, the message I always get is not a "not found" but instead "device
already in use" or something equivalent.

As you know, during the bootup process, I get a screen that says "Choose your
network environment", which has the options of

    default Installation_default

    new Setup_new_environment

Whether booting up into 2.2 or 2.4, I've always chosen the first
option. Could it be possible that by choosing the first option when
booting up into 2.4, I'm making the network try to run on the 2.2 kernel setup,
which is causing a conflict? Perhaps, when I boot up into 2.4, I should
choose "setup new environment"?

If so, the problem I have here is figuring what kinds of values I am
supposed to input in the new setup, because I am asked for all kinds of
addresses and numbers (I am doing DHCP). I am also afraid that if I mess
this up, I'll lose my connection again, and have to do a reinstall (for
the 11th time or so...).

I Googled for "Debian setup new enviroment" but couldn't turn up
anything. I also couldn't find a detailed explanation of this in the
manual.

Any help is appreciated.
