This is from within here; suggested a few times: not everything is
GUI-configurable, but needs intervention in gdm.conf itself. I won't find
those posts for you. And I had to do it last time, before the user
could finally shutdown the PC without pulling the plug. If this has now
changed and vi is not required any longer: hats off, first step to
improvement.

Oh yes, by those who answer "How to start Gnome with kdm ?" with:
uninstall kdm (, install gdm). *That* is trolling.

Still no answer to the OP, then ?
Is kdm not able to start Gnome ? I doubt it.
