This sounds right. Its a virtual file (you also have a stdin, stdout
and stderr if you'll look) that represents a data pipe.
On my laptop: ls -l /dev/gpmdata
prw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Dec 18 15:48 /dev/gpmdata
