..just try 'uname -a' from the cli, details in 'info uname'  ;-)

..easy, 'apt-get update ; apt-get upgrade'.  In bad cases, 
'apt-get dist-upgrade', and do read 'info apt-get'.  ;-)

..huh? 2.2.20 is Bronze Age, you want something recent like 
2.4.22 or 2.4.23, 'apt-cache search kernel-image '.

..and before you recompile, try 'modprobe e100 ' and see if 'lsmod' 
output changes.  Then use Bob's advice on the permanent fix.
