Is it faster on Debian if you do
dvips -Pcmz file.dvi -o file.ps
instead?
I suspect RHL is defaulting to Postscript fonts, and Debian is
putting large bitmaps in there, or perhaps the other way around.
Take a look at the sizes of the PS files that Debian and RHL
produce... if they aren't close, this is probably it.
