Hi Geoff,

Here's a useful excerpt (I hope) from my SSH page:

"Hint Debian GNU/Linux and possibly other distributions too make it easy
on their users by starting an Agent automatically during the
initialization of X if in the file /etc/X11/Xsession.options the option
use-ssh-agent is activated. If the examples presented here are to be
used one must make sure that option is disabled."

Maybe you should check that file to see if that's the case in on your
system.
