I think the tool you want is probably smbtar. It is part of the
smbclient package. The description is:
smbtar - shell script for backing up SMB/CIFS shares directly to UNIX
tape drives
You could use putty on the windows machines to initiate and monitor the
backup via ssh. Seems like the simplest solution to me...
