I just recent had the same quest. I looked at _PHP and MySQL Web
Development_ and decided against it. Instead I went for _Core PHP
Programming_ and _Core MySQL_ by Leon Atkinson. _Core PHP Programming_
appeared, on a quick flip through at Borders, to have a decent layout to be a
reference book with quite a bit of meat to it for when problems arise.

As someone who's got two scripting languages under his belt (Perl, Python)
I'm not so concerned learning the concepts of programming as I am with how PHP
implements them. A book with a decent reference section is perfect for that.

_Core MySQL_ was chosen not because it is the same author but because the
other MySQL books were either too basic for my needs (the visual books you
referenced) or didn't appear to have a decent reference section one could
easily grab onto in short order. As I've not manipulated a relational
database before I'm not sure if this was an ideal choice to set out with. But
since we're beginners only once I figure if I pick it up I'd rather have a
book that is useful for me then.
