Have you tried ':set background=dark'? That's usually a quick way to get
readable colours.

OK. I just took this one step further. I noticed that in /etc/vim/vimrc there are a bunch of 'set foo=bar' statements. I just threw 'set backgroud=dark' in there and then it just worked globally. You could probably also put it in your ~/.vimrc to effect the change on a per user basis, but I didn't try that.
