It's my impression that you don't generally need an MX record if you're
just running your own mail, but if you're also using a backup MX server,
that you need an entry for yourself so that you can specify a lower
priority for your own server than for the backup server ... otherwise,
mail might go to the backup server first.

Is that wrong?

You do need to make arrangements with someone to have them run a backup
MX for you ... one such service provider, with whom I haven't done
business, is dyndns.org ... iirc they charge something like $20 or $30 a
year for backup MX services.
