No, create the session file in:

/etc/gdm/Sessions/

deneb:~> cat /etc/gdm/Sessions/Ion-Devel 
#!/bin/sh

exec /usr/bin/ion-devel

Some of the WM packages you install might create their own
session file in /etc/gdm/Sessions/.
